What Do You Write First? Music or Lyrics?
#1
This is a question I always ask my musician friends, because I like the insight into their creative process. There was a time when I would dread writing lyrics and singing SO much that I would just make instrumental music, be-it dark ambient or glitch or darkwave or complete garbage. Now I dread writing lyrics and singing, but I do it because that's the music I want to make. Anyway,
I want to detail my creative process, and in addition to just answering the simple question, I'd like to hear what you have to say as well. Although I guess I would be content if you were to only do the former.

I consider myself to be a bassist, however most of my songwriting starts with a riff or chord progression on guitar. I could end my answer right here,

but I won't. When I have something I like, I then sort of start to hum a little bit over it to get a sort of vocal melody. Then I use a "throwaway line", so whatever pops into my head I will start singing that in the melody that I'm starting to figure out. Sometimes, maybe about 50%, the throwaway lyric makes the cut and has surprising influence in the song. Sometimes the same process happens but with synth instead of guitar.

TL;DR -- The Music.

Do you write music or lyric first? What's your process?

For those who just write music, maybe I'll make another thread regarding creative process in general or specifically for music.

For me it can be either or
I might get certain inspiration and just play a riff, or I might just write a bunch of verses.
I'm more a poet and lyricist, so I would say more often I write the lyrics

Personally, i'd write the music first then picture what the music makes me want to say, some people prefer writing lyrics and going on with the music later. I personally think it depends on which one tends to give you the main vision, but my personal take is that you'll have more to go on if you start with the music rather than the lyrics.

Id have to be on team lyrics came first. You see, most animals use calls and noises to communicate. Therefor you could assume that primal humans could have communicated with grunts and humming. Humming is sorta lyrics. And before an actual language was formed in ancient Babylonia humming would be used to calm people down. Hense forth, humming is lyrical like, so it came first!

Wow. With your answer, I now see how my topic title may have led you to that thought process haha. I was asking people if they write music or lyrics first. Uh, I remember in my head thinking the "chicken or the egg" format would be clever but maybe it misled some people. What do you write first Slyth? I'm not actually sure if you write lyrics or not.

I believe that the music came first - in the form of drums. It just seems logical - some dudes found that pounding on something was cool.

Alright, I'm changing the topic name -- it's clearly misleading.

My answer remains lyrics. I tend to think of a toon in my head, which i write sort of poetry like lyrics to, then i actually make the music. However the combination of being far to embarrassed to sing, and still training to master the vocaloid software so i can make Fukase sing for me, makes it all difficult, so i just end up making instrumentals that are suppose to have lyrics.
