"Curtain" [Jazz-Rock]

Post by Gravaged » Thu Sep 13, 2018 9:21 am

This is a song that went through like 3 different iterations before becoming what it is now. I really didn't like it for a while but I'm glad I do now. I made the song using a 4 string bass guitar as the primary instrument. The tuning was EbAbDbAb, and I used a shot glass as a slide. To get sax sounds I used Saxlab2. It's not the most realistic sounding but I really like the result that came from it. Additionally I programmed drums like always and I guess that's it. OH!
I forgot, the samples are both from Courage the Cowardly Dog. Both from the intro, actually. I hope that provided some interesting insight into my song writing process.

Put curtains up in my eyes
Yeah I know you don't envy that
Sometimes hide from the light
Shut in like a filthy rat
What a shame when the black sheep cries
Fallen into the same ol trap
The live man's not alive

Got smack just down the street
Saw a girl bloodied on the curb
Emotions are obsolete
And we'll devolve into dirt
Said he's drowning in concrete
Hang myself with a torn up shirt
The live man's not alive

Take it back, you take it back
Ambition that I lack
Take it back, you take it back
decision to attack

Put curtains up in my eyes
Yeah I know you don't envy that
Sometimes hide from the light
Shut in like a filthy rat
What a shame when the black sheep cries
Fallen into the same ol trap
The live man's not alive

Got smack just down the street
Saw a girl bloodied on the curb
Emotions are obsolete
And we'll devolve into dirt
Said he's drowning in concrete
Hang myself with a torn up shirt

[Bridge]

Take it back, you take it back
Ambition that I lack
Take it back, you take it back
decision to attack

love the verse vocal line sax works suprisingly well with bass. The bendy bass riffs are super cool.

Thank you, I thought they had a great synergy as well. I just told you this in the https://discord.gg/YfX5a5Udiscord, but I didn't fret even once. It was all the slide.

Pretty cool and definitely unique. The lyrics are sick.
Thanks! I really wasn't sure what other people would think of the lyrics :)

I'm not sure, I just have a lot of self doubt and question my writing both musically and lyrically -- but definitely lyrically.

Hi Gravaged,

I really enjoy the whole mood and timbre of your song. As a casual listener, I think your song overall sounds perfect and your lyrics complement the music quite well. The sax also offers a nice touch and blends well with the rest of your mix.

I'm personally not too familiar with this genre, so I apologize I couldn't offer anything more substantial as feedback.

Keep up the great work,

Wow this song is honestly great. That bass line is so nasty in a good way, I love the tone. Your voice is also awesome, everything fits perfectly.

Thanks a bunch ! I would say I primarily do alt rock, whether it be shoegaze or just like on the harder side of rock, but I've never made a track quite like this. I'm glad it's been well received, that makes me very happy. I was gonna scrap it like on two different occasions. Thanks again! I'm most self conscious about my voice and lyrics.

Thanks Sky! I'm very happy the sax worked out the way I did, and I hope it was interesting to you. Honestly I'm not too familiar with this specific sound either, it was an experiment. :)

Thank you both!

Welp, i like jazz, and i like rock. So lets see what the great Gravy cooked up!

Ok so, i was chilling out, and forgot about the rock part, so at 24 seconds when you came in, i got genuinely auditory jump scared. However, id like to say, i really enjoyed the way you entered in with the lyrics, although the transition was quick, it was very well done. Me like it! :D

I love the way you deliver lyrics. Its like a demon, siren calling the listener into a trance. The chorus part was perfectly executed.

I love how you included samples from courage the cowardly dog. That was just genius. That show used to be my favorite thing to watch, cause i loved the way it scared me. Adding those really made this song have more of an evil, yet amazing vibe.

Overall, i loved this song! Its well composed and probably one of your best pieces yet in my opinion! I cant wait to see what you make next!
